Meet the founders

Our journey began with a simple wish. Lynne, our co-founder, wanted the flexibility to work from home to stay close to her newborn. Always crafty and creative, she turned her passion for traditional craftsmanship into a business—handcrafting snowshoes from her home in northeastern Ontario.

Her husband and co-founder, Don, shared her passion and was always innovating, experimenting with new weaving techniques and frame materials to improve their designs. Together, their creativity and drive helped our small operation grow into a trusted source for the mining and forestry communities, who rely on dependable gear for navigating the northern wilderness.

Through years of testing and refining our products, we’ve honed our craft, ensuring each pair of snowshoes is built for durability and comfort. Today, we offer not just snowshoes but also custom-made projects, continuing the tradition of care, creativity, and innovation that Lynne and Don started years ago.

Our Story

How did we
get here?

In 1982, wife and husband team Lynne and Don began making snowshoes as a craft. They lived in Timmins, Ontario, where winters are long, cold and snowy. They soon began selling their snowshoes to local trappers, geologists and winter enthusiasts. With her expertise and love of snowshoe making, Lynne became affectionately known far and wide as ‘The Snowshoe Lady.’ In 2023, their three sons assumed the business, renaming it The Heritage Snowshoe Company. Now based in Sudbury, Ontario, Sam, Ben, and Tom continue the tradition of making world-class handmade snowshoes.

After decades of research and development, we found monoline polymer Filament (MPF) to be the best snowshoe weaving material. It is lightweight, non-stick, waterproof, and extremely durable. Our snowshoes are meticulously hand-woven with MPF to a steam-bent While Ash frame, offering unmatched reliability and a maintenance-free ownership experience. “These have become my favourite snowshoes for winter camping adventures. When hauling a sled in deep snow, you need the width of a traditional shaped snowshoe to create a proper float for your toboggan… and you need something you can rely on. If you run into slush it’s easily removed, the weave is tight and requires no maintenance, but best of all they are lightweight.

“I have provided a contract claim staking service in the mining exploration business for the last 25 years and it would not have been as easy to do without the help from Lynne & Don at Heritage Snowshoes.

When a client hires us to stake a mining claim we have to leave “yesterday” and get it done quick in order to beat any possible competition. We mostly work on a piece-work basis and only get paid for the length of claim line that we blaze through the bush.

Consequently if we have inferior snowshoe equipment in the winter we literaly lose money due to slow production. Even if poor snow conditions exist we do not have the luxury of holding off on the work and we have to go with what ever is on the ground. Unfortunately that covers the full spectrum of the sticky wet stuff….to the deep fresh powder….to the ice covered crusty spring snow.

Over the years though, no matter what, Heritage Snowshoes were able to get us the snowshoes that worked best, regardless of the snow conditions. If we were in a rush they somehow managed to get everything we needed in snowshoe equipment, along with good sound advice.

They spent years experimenting and testing various versions and finally hit the jackpot with their present product. “I use Lynne’s ‘fishline’ huron style snowshoe for my outdoor adventures. Lynne’s snowshoes are the first choice for work or recreation. Bush workers, linesmen, mushers, snowmobilers and frequent snowshoers like myself trust her workmanship to never let them down in tough conditions.

For recreational snowshoers, who venture into the deep fluffy snow of northern woods, I recommend the ‘fishline’ models. These shoes combine traditional ash frames & modern mono filament webbing. The result of Lynne’s ingenious blend of old and new is a pair of snowshoes that are light weight, waterproof, maintenance free, durable and attractive.

I believe you have achieved an excellent marriage of traditional and modern and have produced a very functional workhorse
“I purchased a pair of 14 x 48 Hurons from you last year in preparation for a trip down the lower Missinaibi River. We had limited time on that trip and had to move fast, covering the 250km in 17 days. I feel the weight savings of your monoline weave really helped on that trip, but it was on a 39-day trip this year that I really began to appreciate all the benefits of your new weave. Your shoes were really put to the test, and passed with flying colours. We were forced to deal with a lot of nasty terrain (lots of beaver dams, 3km long bushwhack, etc) and unseasonably warm weather. 

The monoline handled the abuse and the warm, wet weather with no signs of wear. My partner on the other hand was using a pair of shoes woven with rawhide, and these were a constant source of anxiety. The abrasive spring snow quickly wore off her varnish and then started eating through the weave. She tried everything on those shoes, including beeswax, bacon grease and vegetable oil, to reseal the rawhide, and eventually had to weave nylon webbing amongst the rawhide to reduce sagging. In addition to the webbing, you can see signs of lots of either minor repairs which were required on the rawhide shoe.
